BuSpar (buspirone) is a medication intended for the treatment of anxiety and depression. It works by turning on a receptor switch located on the surface of serotonin brain cells called the serotonin-1A receptor. Studies show that BuSpar can relieve both depressive and anxious symptoms, but the effect is not large. Doctors sometimes add BuSpar to existing antidepressants to increase their effects, but BuSpar is seldom sufficiently effective on its own.
