Research shows that laughter has many health benefits in fact, it is so good for you, that doctors sometimes call it “medicine.” Why? Laughter can help strengthen the body’s immune system by increasing the number of antibody-producing cells and boosting T cells (a white blood cell that protects the body from infection). Humor also relieves the stresses and pressures of everyday living, by reducing the body’s stress hormones like corti-sol, epinephrine (adrenaline), dopamine, and growth hormone. It also increases the level of good hormones like endorphins, which promote a feeling of happiness. A deep belly laugh exercises the diaphragm and contracts the abdominal muscles, leaving them more relaxed afterward. And it provides a good workout for the heart.
