French nun. Name variations: Margaret Mary Alacoque. Pronunciation: ah-lah-COKE. Born in Lauthecour, Saoˆne-et-Loire, in central France, July 22, 1647; died at Paray-le-Monial, France, Oct 17, 1690.

Attributed a recovery from paralysis to the intercession of the Virgin Mary and entered the convent at Paray; her visions of Christ provided the origin of the Catholic practice of worshipping the Sacred Heart of Jesus; was beatified (1864), and canonized by Benedict XV (1920).

Feast day is Oct 17.
