A drug that relieves the symptoms of anxiety. Commonly prescribed among these drugs are the benzodiazepines such as alpra-zolam (trade name Xanax) and diazepam (trade name Valium). The main side effects of these medications are drowsiness and dependence. Many of the antidepressants (especially the SSRIs) and bus-pirone are better choices for daily medication of chronic anxiety.
