A drug that relieves depression. There are three major kinds of antide-pressants: tricyclic antidepressant medications, SELECTIVE SEROTONIN REUPTAKE INHIBITOR (SSRI) MEDICATIONS, and MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITOR (maoi) medication. Antidepressant medications affect dopamine mechanisms in the brain, sometimes worsening symptoms such as tremors and dyskinesias. The MAOI selegiline, one of the ANTI-parkinson’s medications, is sometimes used because of its neuroprotective qualities. Other antidepressant medications cannot be taken at the same time as nonselective MAOIs, and special attention should be paid to starting them slowly and monitoring closely for side effects if they are given with selective MAOIs.
