What is death; cause, manner, and mechanism – in forensic science

The job of a medical examiner or coroner is to determine and certify the facts surrounding a death. This is accomplished by conducting an autopsy as part of the death investigation. The cause of death is that event or process such as a disease or injury that led to the cessation of life. The mechanism of death is set in motion by the cause of death. The manner of death is the category that describes the circumstances that led to infliction of the cause of death. The categories used are homicide (intentional killing by someone besides the victim), suicide (self-homicide), accidental, natural (disease), treatment induced (for example, death during surgery or drug interaction), and indeterminate. They do not all necessarily involve criminal activity, although all can have legal consequence.
