An inclusive term that encompasses a range of health care and related services that a person may need for an extended period. Care may include hiring of health care professionals who provide care in the home, such as home health nurses and physical therapists, or admission to residential care, as in an assisted living facility, a SKILLED NURSING FACILITY (SNF), or a LONG-TERM care facility. Although it is a common perception that long-term care relates to care in a residential setting other than the home, more people receive long-term care services at home than in residential care facilities. Home services extend the care options available for those who are partially independent. Private medical insurance plans and medicaid may cover part of the related expenses of in-home services.
