A founding member and lead singer of the rhythm and blues group Earth, Wind, and Fire who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in early 1990 after he noticed tremor in his hands. White was 50 years old at the time of his diagnosis, and, as do many public figures, initially kept his Parkinson’s diagnosis under wraps. He announced his diagnosis in 2000 in an interview for Rolling Stone magazine when Earth, Wind, and Fire was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. White toured with the band for five years after his diagnosis, controlling his symptoms with anti-parkinson’s medications, before retiring in 1994 to devote his efforts to producing rather than performing.
