A broad classification of dysfunctions and diseases that impair the body’s ability to move, sometimes called motor function disorders or movement disorders. Many motor system disorders are progressive and degenerative, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (ALS), and MUSCULAR dystrophy. These disorders often have genetic components. For such disorders, treatment typically targets symptom control. Other motor system disorders result from trauma or injury and remain stable or can improve with treatment, such as stroke and spinal cord injury.
